Thornburg sets eyes on future.

Byline: Wendy Brown

Sep. 8--The Chinese character for crisis is the same as the one for opportunity, he said, so when the dust settles in the mortgage industry, Thornburg Mortgage will have a lot less competition, and a lot more people will know about the companyand its excellent mortgage portfolio.

Thornburg Mortgage will share the 102,000square-foot campus on North Ridgetop Road near N.M. 599 with two other firms Thornburg founded: Thornburg Cos., of which he is chairman and chief executive officer, and Thornburg Investment Management.

The groundbreaking was a positive note in a tough spate of weeks for Thornburg Mortgage, which saw its stock slide from $18.06 to $7.61 a share from Aug. 10 to Aug. 14. And the decline

occurred after several analysts downgraded the stock because they were concerned the company would not be able to borrow money in the tumultuous mortgage industry.

That surprised many people because Thornburg specializes in adjustable-rate mortgages of more than $417,000 to wealthy people with excellent credit.

The company's originated loans had a default rate of less than 0.2 percent in the first quarter of this year, well below the industry average for prime ARM loans, according to Thornburg.

In recent weeks, the company has sold stock and securities to raise money, and was able to borrow $1.4 billion this week, according to the company. Its stock was up 56 cents Friday to $12.62.

The Thornburg Cos. employ a total of 358 people, many of whom were at the groundbreaking. Blake Gordon, who has worked in Thornburg Mortgage's marketing department for two years, said she thinks the building's design is great, and she and other employees look forward to working there.

Thornburg Mortgage has grown exponentially in recent years, Gordon said, and its current quarters are getting crowded.

Mayor David Coss, New Mexico First Lady Barbara Richardson, City Councilor Patti Bushee, several local bank executives and other members of Santa Fe's business community also attended. The crowd gave Thornburg a standing ovation, clapping continuously for about 30 seconds.

Coss said he supported putting the city's name on $45 million in industrial revenue bonds for the companies in part because they provide a lot of high-paying jobs in Santa Fe.

But the companies aren't just a contributor of money to the community, the mayor said.

They also are good community partners that are involved in more than 70 nonprofit organizations in Santa Fe, he said.

Coss said he also was impressed because no one from Thornburg ever threatened to leave Santa Fe if the city did not approve the industrial revenue bonds, which give the company a significant property-tax benefit.

Richardson and Coss praised the company for planning to build a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design -- or LEED -- gold-certified building. Thornburg said the building would use half the water of most contemporary office buildings of its size as well as 40 percent less energy.

Don Padgett, president of Century Bank in Santa Fe, said the groundbreaking is a sign of progress. "It's good for Santa Fe because Thornburg is a clean, green and prosperous company,"he said. Ron Chavez, president of First Community Bank in Santa Fe, said the construction is a big capital investment and shows the Thornburg Cos. have a strong commitment to Santa Fe. He said the companies are known throughout the country and will bring the city more national attention.

In his talk, Thornburg deviated significantly from the copy of his prepared speech the Thornburg Cos. had given to the press.

As one example, he told how he had started the companies 30 years ago in a tiny, two-person office at 444 Galisteo St.

At that time, Federal Express had just begun, and there were only 300,000 fax machines in the country, he said. Operating from Santa Fe is much easier now with the Internet and other technological advances, Thornburg said.

He also noted that back when he started doing financial business in Santa Fe, he had to be careful about how he presented himself in New York City financial circles, though now he might be able to be a little more casual. "When I went toNewYork, I always made a point of wearing a three-piece suit, because I think there was an expectation that I would be wearing a poncho and have pottery in my hands," Thornburgsaid.

Spam battle intensifies.

May 19, 2003 (The West Australian - ABIX via COMTEX)

The Australian Internet Association (AIA) has announced that it plans to extend its campaign targeting unsolicited e-mails to mid-August 2003. The association launched the campaign on 16 April 2003, with plans for it to run until 16 May 2003. However, the AIA said that the scheme had proven particularly successful, and it had decided to extend the program for a further four months. AIA CEO Peter Coroneos said it offered free trial software products to stop unsolicited e-mails. Coroneos said that traffic to the association's web site had increased significantly since the beginning of the campaign. He said that so-called "spam" e-mails had been a growing problem in Australia, while US figures have shown that the total volume of unsolicited e-mails increases 18 per cent per month.

SECRETARY CLINTON: REMARKS TO THE PRESS ON THE RELEASE OF THE 2010 COUNTRY REPORTS ON HUMAN RIGHTS PRACTICES.

WASHINGTON -- The following information was released by the U.S. Department of State:

Good morning, everyone. I'm here today to present the 35th annual report to Congress on the state of human rights around the world. The struggle for human rights begins by telling the truth over and over again. And this report represents a year of sustained truth-telling by one of the largest organizations documenting human rights conditions in the world, the United States State Department.

I want to thank Assistant Secretary Mike Posner and the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, and our hundreds of colleagues and embassies around the world for working so hard to make this report an honest compendium of global human rights issues. I also want to thank the many people around the world who monitor and fight for human rights in their own societies, and from whose information and recommendations we greatly benefit.

In recent months, we have been particularly inspired by the courage and determination of the activists in the Middle East and North Africa and in other repressive societies who have demanded peaceful democratic change and respect for their universal human rights. The United States will stand with those who seek to advance the causes of democracy and human rights wherever they may live, and we will stand with those who exercise their fundamental freedoms of expression and assembly in a peaceful way, whether in person, in print, or in pixels on the internet. This report usually generates a great deal of interest among journalists, lawmakers, nongovernmental organizations, and of course, other governments, and I hope it will again this year.

As part of our mission to update statecraft for the 21st century, today I'm also pleased to announce the launch of our new website, humanrights.gov. This site will offer one-stop shopping for information about global human rights from across the United States Government. It will pull together reports, statements, and current updates from around the world. It will be searchable and it will be safe. You won't need to register to use it. We hope this will make it easier for citizens, scholars, NGOs, and international organizations to find the information they need to hold governments accountable.

Here at the State Department, human rights is a priority 365 days a year. It is part of the mission of each of our ambassadors. It is on my agenda or on Under Secretary Otero's or anyone else's who meets with foreign leaders. And it is a core element of the Obama Administration's foreign policy, because it actually is in line with our values, our interests, and our security. History has shown that governments that respect their people's rights do tend, over time, to be more stable, more peaceful, and ultimately more prosperous.

We were particularly disturbed by three growing trends in 2010. The first is a widespread crackdown on civil society activists. For countries to progress toward truly democratic governance, they need free and vibrant civil societies that can help governments understand and meet the needs of their people. But we've seen in Venezuela, for example, the government using the courts to intimidate and persecute civil society activists. The Venezuelan Government imposed new restrictions on the independent media, the internet, political parties, and NGOs. In Russia, we've seen crackdowns on civil society groups turn violent with numerous attacks and murders of journalists and activists. In China, we've seen negative trends that are appearing to worsen in the first part of 2011.

As we have said repeatedly, the United States welcomes the rise of a strong and prosperous China, and we look forward to our upcoming Strategic and Economic Dialogue with Beijing and to our continued cooperation to address common global challenges. However, we remain deeply concerned about reports that, since February, dozens of people, including public interest lawyers, writers, artists, intellectuals, and activists have been arbitrarily detained and arrested. Among them most recently was the prominent artist, Ai Weiwei, who was taken into custody just this past Sunday. Such detention is contrary to the rule of law, and we urge China to release all of those who have been detained for exercising their internationally recognized right to free expression and to respect the fundamental freedoms and human rights of all of the citizens of China.

Beyond a widespread crackdown on civil society activists, we saw a second trend in 2010 - countries violating the fundamental freedoms of expression, assembly, and association by curtailing internet freedom. More than 40 governments now restrict the internet through various means. Some censored websites for political reasons. And in a number of countries, democracy and human rights activists and independent bloggers found their emails hacked or their computers infected with spyware that reported back on their every keystroke. Digital activists have been tortured so they would reveal their passwords and implicate their colleagues. In Burma and in Cuba, government policies preempted online dissent by keeping most ordinary people from accessing the internet at all.

The third disturbing trend of 2010 was the repression of vulnerable minorities, including racial and ethnic and religious minorities along with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In Pakistan, for example, blasphemy remains a crime punishable by death. And the blasphemy law has been enforced against Muslims who do not share the beliefs of other Muslims, and also against non-Muslims who worship differently.

In the first two months of 2011, two government officials in Pakistan who sought to reform the law, Governor Taseer and Minister Bhatti, were targeted by a fatwa and assassinated. Also, in Iraq, Egypt, and Nigeria, violent attacks by extremists have killed dozens of people who have been peacefully practicing their religions, Christians and Muslims alike. In Iran, we have multiple reports that the government summarily executed more than 300 people in 2010. Many of them were ethnic minorities. For example, in May, four Kurdish men were hanged in Evin Prison. They had been arrested in 2006 for advocating that Iran should respect human rights. They were reported to have confessed to terrorism under torture. And because I believe, and our government believes, that gay rights are human rights, we remain extremely concerned about state-sanctioned homophobia. In Uganda, for example, homosexuality remains illegal, and people are being harassed, discriminated against, threatened, and intimidated.

But the news is, of course, not all bad. We have seen improvements in the human rights situations in a number of countries, and we've also seen the uprisings of the past months in the Middle East and North Africa, where people are demanding their universal human rights. In Colombia, the government began consulting with human rights defenders. It is supporting efforts to stop violence. It has passed a law to restore land and pay reparations to the victims of the very long civil conflict that occurred in Colombia. Guinea held free and fair elections and inaugurated its first democratically elected president. And Indonesia boasts a vibrant free media and a flourishing civil society at the same time as it faces up to challenges in preventing abuses by its security forces and acting against religious intolerance.

Societies flourish when they address human rights problems instead of suppressing them. Freedom from fear makes economies grow as citizens invest, innovate, and participate. Where human rights matter, children grow up with the precious belief that they matter, too; that they should be able to live in dignity and shape their own destinies. People everywhere deserve no less. And we hope that this report will give comfort to the activists, will shine a spotlight on the abuses, and convince those in government that there are other and better ways.

And we want to see progress. We started doing this report 35 years ago because we believed that progress is possible. And certainly, if you were to do a chart from 35 years ago to today, you would see a lot of progress in a lot of places. But at the same time, we must remain vigilant, and this report is one of the tools that we use to be that way.

Thank you all. Now, Assistant Secretary Mike Posner.

A FITTING TRADITION; The wedding dress shopping experience is no longer reserved for sample-size brides. Twin Cities retailers are giving full-figured brides more options than ever.(VARIETY)

Byline: AIMEE TJADER; STAFF WRITER

When a sales consultant at a local bridal shop tried to squeeze a sample size 8 wedding dress over Lisa Thompson's size 16 body, then asked her to step in front of a mirror for the entire store to see, Thompson described the experience in one word: awkward.

"To be forced into a dress that's eight sizes too small. ... I looked ridiculous," said the 27-year-old Roseville bride-to-be.

Shopping for the perfect wedding dress is supposed to be a rite of passage for brides, but it can be a frustrating one for those who are full-figured. Some have been so humiliated by the dress-shopping experience that they skip trying on dresses altogether, order a dress online and hope it fits.

Twin Cities retailers say they're making changes so larger-sized brides can have the experience of trying on pretty dresses in a chic location surrounded by mothers and girlfriends. In fact, the metro area has two new salons that cater solely to brides size 14 and up.

The newest is Luxe Bridal Couture, located in Minneapolis' historic Semple Mansion. It claims to be the first plus-size bridal boutique in the Twin Cities, and one of several in the country, to carry high-end couture designs such as James Clifford and Essense of Australia, whose designs are meant to flatter a woman's curves.

At Luxe, brides are greeted with a glass of champagne as they enter spacious dressing rooms decorated with shimmering chandeliers, fainting couches and size 18/20 mannequins donning the latest in bridal fashion.

Thompson went to Luxe on her second attempt to find her dream gown. The look on her face when she emerged from one of the elaborate dressing rooms made it clear she had found the right spot.

"It hits the hips really well, which is what I was concerned about," she said with a half-smile, her head tilted to the side, admiring the way the strapless dress hugged her curves in just the right places.

Owner Shayna Clute said that while working as a wedding planner in western New York, she realized that plus-size brides weren't getting the same level of service that "normal-size" brides were.

"Brides either couldn't get the dresses on, they'd rip -- which would mortify the bride -- or the sales associate would ask a thinner bridesmaid or friend to try on the dress for her," she said. "It was an unpleasant experience even for me, so I can only imagine how they felt -- I can't imagine being ignored."

Plus-size brides don't want to be singled out, either, by being sent to the "women's section" of bridal shops, Clute said. They want the same experience that their average-size friends have experienced for so long, which is why Clute decided to partner with Posh Bridal Couture, which offers dresses in traditional sizes. The two boutiques operate on an appointment-only basis and share the Semple Mansion location, displaying the appropriate dress size for each client.

Time for a bigger bride

If the size of the average American woman is any indication, catering to curvy brides makes sense. The plus-size market is one of the few retail categories that is growing. And about 25 percent of the 2.4 million women nationwide who get married each year are size 14 or larger, according to one retailer for curvy women, www.alwaysforme.com.

The fashion industry is slowly catching on. At Full-Figured Fashion Week in New York last summer, more than 25 designers showed off clothes meant to complement curvy bodies. Target carries a line called Pure Energy Plus, fashion-forward "trend-right" clothing in sizes 14 and up.

David's Bridal, a national chain with four Twin Cities stores, has a collection of gowns in sizes 14 to 26, and like most bridal salons, can order any gown in a larger size for an extra fee.

In Andover, the Glass Slipper Bridal Boutique carries about 80 dresses in sizes 18 to 30 with prices ranging from $350 to $1,700.

After working in a bridal salon for a few months and seeing "so many women frustrated to tears," owner Pat Ferguson saw an opportunity to do something about it.

"There are very few plus-size stores in the whole country for bridal," she said of her decision to open the store last year. "Over half of my customers are from out-of-state. We even had a bride drive from Montana."

Shopping the Web

Frustrated by their lack of options, many altar-bound brides head to the Internet.

"My dress shopping experience was nonexistent. I'd shopped with a plus-size friend for her wedding gown and the experience was so deflating -- both in excitement around the event and her self-esteem -- that I had no desire to go through with it myself," said Sara Bartlett, the author of Bombshell Beauty, a blog about plus-size fashion. "I ordered my dress, sight unseen, off the Internet."

Websites like www.plus sizebridal.com offer dresses in sizes 0 to 32 and all of the plus-sizes are returnable or exchangeable, so the bride never has to step into a store.

For Thompson, however, it's about more than the dress. She was able to share a special moment with her future mother-in-law in a chic boutique, surrounded by gorgeous gowns.

The University of Minnesota veterinary student fell in love with an ivory Jacquelin Exclusive designer dress with a sweetheart neckline, but she'll be back to share the moment with her mom and sister before making a final decision for her June 2013 wedding.

"I was really concerned about falling in love with a dress that wasn't in my size," she said. "I don't even know what sizes the dresses were that I tried on. I didn't have to worry about it, because they all fit."
