Fed: Trans-Tasman projects to deal with climate change
Australia and New Zealand have announced they'll work together to monitor global warming
and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The two countries plan to increase climate monitoring in the South-West Pacific region,
step up research into climate change, and reduce emissions of synthetic greenhouse gas
emissions.
Australian Environment Minister DAVID KEMP and PETE HODGSON, Convenor of New Zealand's
Ministerial Group on Climate Change, announced the joint projects at an international
climate change conference in Milan, in Italy.
Dr KEMP says the announcement reinforces the commitment of the two countries to deal
with climate change.
Unlike Australia, New Zealand has signed the Kyoto protocol on climate change, which
requires signatories to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The two countries formed a partnership on climate change in July.
