Vic: Man says dad forced him into beating grandmother to death

A Melbourne court has been told a man who confessed to beating 79-year-old grandmother
to death says his father forced him to do it to get the inheritance.

JAPALJARRI, formerly known as BRENT ANDREW HOCKING, pleaded NOT guilty to murder, arson
and burglary.

Crown prosecutor GEOFF HORGAN told the Supreme Court jury that before the killing,
JAPALJARRI had twice ransacked the woman's Box Hill unit and had also fire-bombed it by
throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window.

Mr HORGAN says PHYLIS HOCKING was found dead in a pool of blood at her son's home on
October 26, 1993.

The murder went unsolved until late in 1998 when people came forward and told police
JAPALJARRI had confessed to the murder, the arson attack and burglary.

However, he said there was no evidence to suggest JAPALJARRI'S father PHILIP HOCKING
had influenced him.

The trial before Justice FRANK VINCENT is continuing.

Qld: Court appearance for man charged over Mother s Day murder

A man charged over the Mother's Day murder of a man in a Brisbane club last year has
been remanded to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court next week.

THI DINH NGUYEN, 18, from Bonnyrigg in Sydney's west, appeared in the Warwick Magistrates
Court charged with the murder of SON TRUONG LUU whose body was found in the toilet of
the Cypriot Club in Brisbane's West End last May.

NGUYEN was remanded in custody to face the charge in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday.





NGUYEN and 20-year-old CVONG NGO, of Villawood, have also been charged with possession
of a dangerous drug and trafficking after police allegedly found 300 grams of heroin in
their car.

They are due to appear in the Warwick Magistrates Court on June 2 for a committal mention
on the drugs charges.

MELBOURNE, Jan 18 AAP - A large bushfire which forced the evacuation of 200 campers
from the Glenelg National Park on Victoria's border with South Australia was continuing
to blaze out of control, firefighters said.

The fire had engulfed 1,300 hectares of pine plantation and national park by late tonight,
said a spokeswoman for the Victorian Department of Natural Resources (DNRE).

It began on private land six kilometres east of Nelson this afternoon.

CANBERRA, Aug 26 AAP - Opposition Leader Kim Beazley today moved quickly to counteract
jeff.com - the website homage to Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett.

"Oh yes I'll have my own web site out there," Mr Beazley told reporters.

Mr Kennett's website features a picture of the premier on every page, including shots of
him in the garden, at the footy, and as a cover boy.

Launched on Day One of the state election campaign, jeff.com.au gives voters the chance to

Unions say Victorian Premier JEFF KENNETT has given a personal guarantee that jobs will be
found for Geelong cement workers facing retrenchment.

After a meeting with the Premier, Australian Workers Union state secretary BILL SHORTEN
says he's disappointed Mr KENNETT says there's nothing he can do to prevent the closure of the
plant.

About 150 workers face retrenchment with Adelaide Brighton, the owner of the 110-year-old
Geelong Cement plant, planning to close the factory following a merger deal with Britain's
number two cement maker, Rugby Plc.

Mr SHORTEN says unions had hoped Mr KENNETT would unite with them and the opposition in a
submission to the Competition and Consumer Commission and the Foreign Investment Review Board.

He says both organisations say they have reservations about the merger.

NSW: Police arrest 9 men, including former policeman, over drugs

SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - Nine men, including a former police officer, were charged with serious
drug offences during a major police operation in New South Wales today, police said.

Officers from Operation Gymea arrested the men simultaneously at various locations in
Sydney and country NSW and charged them with conspiracy to manufacture amphetamines, police
said in a statement.

The arrested men included a 41-year-old former NSW police officer from Guilford in Sydney's
west, police said.

The arrests were part of the third phase of Operation Gymea and followed months of
investigation and covert activities by police internal affairs.

Warrants were issued for the arrest of three other men on the same charge, police said.

This brought the number of people facing charges in connection with the anti-drug and
corruption operation to 72, including four police.

Most were awaiting trial, police said.

Officers from Operation Gymea, formed in 1997, have seized drugs with an estimated street
value of $10.2 million.

They include amphetamines, ecstasy, cannabis, cocaine and heroin.
